Is it possible to have a working German Shepherd dog as a family dog?

The German Shepherd is a popular family dog due to its loyalty and dependability toward humans. In fact, a well-behaved and well-exercised four-legged pet is an excellent companion and partner, making it ideal for living in a family. A properly-socialized German Shepherd is very affectionate toward youngsters and gets along well with other pets. However, physical and mental stimulation for the active dog is required for a life as a family dog. Dogs who are not kept occupied enough, and whose natural desire to move and work is ignored, acquire negative habits that are foreign to the generally well-balanced pedigree dog.
